We've all been there — it's 2am, the exam is in eight hours, and you're frantically re-reading your notes for the fifth time. Spoiler: it's not working. Passive re-reading is one of the least effective study methods out there, yet it's what most students default to.
The good news? Cognitive science has given us a much better toolkit. These five techniques are backed by decades of research and, more importantly, they actually work in the real world of student life — not just in a lab.
1. Spaced Repetition
Instead of cramming everything into one long session, spaced repetition spreads your study over multiple shorter sessions with increasing gaps between them. The idea is to review material just before you're about to forget it — which forces your brain to work harder to retrieve it, strengthening the memory trace.
Apps like Anki make this easy by automatically scheduling your flashcard reviews. Even 15 minutes a day using spaced repetition will outperform a 3-hour cram session the night before.
2. Active Recall
Close your notes and try to recall everything you just learned. It sounds simple — and uncomfortable — but that discomfort is the point. The act of retrieving information from memory is far more effective than passively reading it again.
Try the 'blank page' method: after a lecture, take out a blank sheet and write down everything you can remember. Then check your notes for gaps. Repeat until the page is full.
3. The Pomodoro Technique
Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four cycles, take a longer 20-30 minute break. This structured approach prevents mental fatigue and keeps your focus sharp throughout a study session.
The key is to treat the break as sacred — no 'just one more paragraph'. Step away, stretch, grab a drink, and let your brain consolidate what it just processed.
4. The Feynman Technique
Pick a concept and explain it as if you were teaching it to a 10-year-old. Wherever you stumble or use jargon you can't simplify, that's a gap in your understanding. Go back to your notes, fill the gap, and try again.
This technique is particularly powerful for complex topics like economics, law, or science — subjects where it's easy to memorise words without truly understanding the underlying ideas.
5. Interleaving
Rather than studying one subject for hours at a time (blocked practice), mix up different topics or subjects within a single session. It feels harder and less productive in the moment — but research consistently shows it leads to better long-term retention and the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.
Try alternating between three subjects in a single two-hour session rather than dedicating two hours to one. Your future-exam-self will thank you.
